Trust Falls – Solo show at Interstate Projects – Oct. 21 – Dec. 10

Trust Falls

10/21/2011 – 12/10/2011

Opening Reception October 21, 2011:  6-9 pm

Interstate Projects is pleased to present Trust Falls, Jesse McLean’s first solo exhibition in New York City.  In separate rooms there will be two new videos, Trust Falls, andRemote, that investigate trust, presence and the deceptive nature of the cinematic experience.

To watch movies requires trust in a certain technical magic. Viewers must suspend their rational beliefs and while this rationality is suspended, other systems are at work. Light and sound waves project through the air, passing retinas and eardrums to lodge more permanently in psychic spaces. The work in Trust Falls considers this complex transference between what is seen on screen and what is absorbed in the viewer’s mind.

In the collage video Remote, dream logic invokes a presence that drifts through physical and temporal barriers. In the video Trust Falls, the subject stares outward, becoming another viewer. This viewer leans back, falling into a cinematic void and trusting that outside, there is another viewer waiting to catch their image.

Jesse McLean (b. 1975) lives and works in Chicago, IL. She studied art at Oberlin College and received her MFA in Moving Image from University of Illinois at Chicago. She is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at University of Illinois at Chicago.  She was the winner of the Overkill Award at the 2011 Images Festival and the Barbara Aronofsky Latham Award for Emerging Experimental Video Artist at the 2010 Ann Arbor Film Festival. She has presented her work at Transmediale, 25 FPS Festival, European Media Arts Festival, Wexner Center for the Arts, Venice Film Festival, Conversations at the Edge, Impakt, CPH:DOX, Kassel Doc FF, NEXT, Art Chicago and PPOW Gallery.

Second Self at Gallery 400

Second Self, a program I have curated in response to Intimacies, a group exhibit at Gallery400, will screen Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 7pm. More information about Intimacies can be found here

Screened in tandem with Intimacies, currently on exhibit at Gallery400, this program of videos and films locates itself on the interstice between screen and receptive audience mind. The artists included have allowed the camera to function as a portal, and awarded the viewer access into their own lives, or at least the lives of their developed personas. Through this portal they impersonate celebrities (SCHWANSE), decide what to wear (ANGER), what not to wear (NELSON), instruct (YOUNGMAN), guide (RAFMAN), kiss (BENGLIS), rage (CROCKER) and desperately try to communicate (ACCONCI). These artists aren’t looking to be simply observed but rather push outward at the audience, demanding a reaction. More desperate than angry, the gesture becomes an invitation for the viewer to step across the thin fabric of the screen and become someone new.

Featuring: Open Book by Vito Acconci (9:10, 1974), Puce Moment by Kenneth Anger (6:30, 16mm, 1949), Female Sensibility by Lynda Benglis (13:05, Video, 1973), Leave Britney Alone! by Chris Crocker (2:12, Video, 2007), Take Off by Gunvor Nelson (10:00, 16mm, 1972), Kool-Aid Man in Second Life: Interview by Nicholas O’Brien by Jon Rafman (18:01, Video, 2009),k-a-t-e (s) by Nina Schwanse (10:41, Video, 2010), ART THOUGHTZ: The Female Gaze, with Special Guest Tamara Suber (NSFW) by Hennessy Youngman (8:14, Video, 2011). Hang in There at Co-Prosperity Sphere, June 17 opening

I’ll be showing a new piece as part of this group show curated by Jason Lazarus, Hang in There. There are sooooo many great artists in the show, I’m excited! Come out and see the show and the new work, about which I’ll say this: I hope you like to dance.

More about the show:

Hang in There is an exhibition asking artists to make motivational artworks.  Cultural producers often face difficult roads to develop a sustainable practice.  This exhibition is an opportunity for artists to provide an alternative to the commodified and saturated market for motivation, transcending the usual glut of advice, adages, and worksheets to something more singular, incisive, heartfelt, and critically-minded.

Opening June 17, 2011 / 7 – 10 PM at The Co-Prosperity Sphere in Chicago, IL.
