Rosetta
Archival digital print, 32″ by 41″, 2010
Rosetta is a print modeled after the Rosetta Stone, a slab of black basalt inscribed with identical lines of hieroglyphics, demotic and Greek languages, that helped with the translation of hieroglyphics.
In Rosetta, a low-res thumbnail image of the Rosetta Stone, gleaned from the internet, is scaled up to more accurate dimensions, rendering the translation possibilities impossible. The piece suggests both the weaknesses of digital methodologies and the possibility of a new language of digital compression, to be translated by future generations.
